Hoffmanns Erzählungen

Composer: Jacques Offenbach
Libretto: Jules Barbier
Stage Version & New Dialogue Adaptation: Peter te Nuyl
Based on: Stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann
Genre: Opéra fantastique in a prologue, three acts, and an epilogue

Les Contes d'Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann) is a captivating journey through love, illusion, and the fragile boundary between fantasy and reality.

In a tavern, the poet Hoffmann recalls the three great loves of his life. His first story tells of Olympia, a beautiful mechanical doll whom he mistakes for a real woman. In the second, he falls in love with Antonia, a gifted young singer whose passion for music ultimately leads to her tragic death. His final tale takes him to Venice, where the seductive Giulietta betrays him for wealth and pleasure, leaving him heartbroken once again.

Throughout these stories, mysterious forces manipulate Hoffmann's destiny, while his faithful Muse secretly guides him toward a greater purpose. After suffering disappointment in each romance, Hoffmann realizes that his pain is the source of his artistic inspiration and embraces his calling as a poet.

Essence - Das Wesentliche

Les Contes d'Hoffmann is Offenbach's greatest operatic masterpiece, blending romance, fantasy, comedy, and tragedy into a richly imaginative work. With its unforgettable music, magical atmosphere, and emotionally compelling characters, the opera explores love, obsession, illusion, and the transformative power of art, reminding us that even heartbreak can inspire extraordinary creativity.

Venue

The Volksoper Wien, or Vienna People's Opera, is one of Vienna's major opera houses. It's located in the 9th district and is renowned for its diverse programming that includes operas, operettas, musicals, and ballets. Founded in 1898 originally as a straightforward theatre, it has developed into a globally recognized venue for accessible performances of a wide range of musical theater genres.

The Volksoper is Vienna's leading house for operetta, the lighter, more accessible cousin of opera, often involving spoken dialogue alongside music. It serves as a complement to the more formal Wiener Staatsoper, offering performances that appeal to a broader audience, including children and families. The repertoire includes classics by composers such as Johann Strauss, Franz Lehár, and Emmerich Kálmán, alongside well-known operas and popular musicals.

The Volksoper also has a commitment to cultivating new talents and features performances by up-and-coming artists as well as established stars. With approximately 300 performances a year, it plays a pivotal role in Vienna's cultural scene, providing entertainment that is both high in quality and varied in style. This opera house is an integral part of Vienna's rich musical heritage, offering a more casual and inclusive approach to the performing arts.
