Tristan und Isolde is one of opera's greatest love stories, exploring the overwhelming power of passion, fate, and sacrifice.
The Irish princess Isolde is being escorted across the sea to marry King Marke of Cornwall. Her escort is Tristan, the king's most loyal knight. Unknown to the court, Tristan and Isolde already share a painful past: Tristan once killed Isolde's fiancé, and she secretly saved his life when he was gravely wounded.
Believing they are about to drink poison together, Tristan and Isolde instead consume a love potion. Overcome by an irresistible passion, they fall deeply in love, despite knowing that their love is forbidden.
Their secret is eventually discovered by King Marke, whose trust is shattered. Tristan is mortally wounded in a duel and retreats to his ancestral home, where he longs for Isolde's arrival. She reaches him just as he dies in her arms.
In the opera's transcendent final scene, Isolde sings the famous "Liebestod" (Love-Death), surrendering herself to a love that can only be fulfilled beyond earthly life.
