Manon Lescaut is a passionate tragedy about love, desire, and the price of ambition.
On her way to a convent, the beautiful young Manon Lescaut meets the student Des Grieux. They fall instantly in love and flee together to begin a new life. Their happiness, however, is threatened by poverty, and Manon is tempted by the wealth and luxury offered by the wealthy Geronte.
Although she leaves Des Grieux for a life of privilege, she soon realizes that riches cannot replace true love. The lovers reunite and attempt to escape together, but Manon is arrested for theft and immorality and sentenced to deportation to the French colony of Louisiana.
Des Grieux follows her across the ocean, determined never to abandon her. Their desperate escape ends in a vast wilderness, where, exhausted and unable to continue, Manon dies in his arms. Left alone with overwhelming grief, Des Grieux mourns the loss of the woman he loved above all else.
