Madama Butterfly - Giacomo Puccini

Madama Butterfly is a heartbreaking story of love, hope, betrayal, and sacrifice.

In Nagasaki, the young geisha Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly, falls deeply in love with the American naval officer Pinkerton. They marry, but while Butterfly believes their union is genuine and everlasting, Pinkerton views it as a temporary arrangement before returning home.

For years, Butterfly faithfully waits for his return, raising their young son and refusing to believe that he has abandoned her. When Pinkerton finally comes back to Japan, he is accompanied by his American wife and intends to take custody of the child.

Heartbroken yet determined to preserve her dignity, Butterfly entrusts her son to Pinkerton and his wife. After bidding her child a final farewell, she takes her own life, remaining faithful to her ideals until the very end.
