L'Orfeo - Claudio Monteverdi

L'Orfeo is one of the earliest masterpieces in opera history, telling the timeless myth of love, loss, and the redemptive power of music.

The celebrated musician Orfeo and his beloved Euridice are united in marriage, but their happiness is shattered when Euridice dies from a snakebite shortly after the wedding. Overcome with grief, Orfeo resolves to journey into the Underworld to bring her back.

Armed only with the beauty of his music, Orfeo softens the hearts of the spirits of the dead and even moves Pluto and Proserpina to compassion. They agree to release Euridice on one condition: Orfeo must not look back at her until they have both returned safely to the world above.

As they near the end of their journey, doubt and longing overwhelm him. Unable to resist, Orfeo turns to look at Euridice, and she vanishes forever into the realm of the dead. Left alone in sorrow, Orfeo is ultimately comforted by his father, Apollo, who leads him toward the heavens, where earthly grief is transformed into eternal peace.
