Vienna State Opera: Don Carlo - Giuseppe Verdi

Set in 16th-century Spain during the reign of King Philip II, Don Carlo is a sweeping historical drama of love, friendship, sacrifice, and the struggle for freedom.

Infante Don Carlo is deeply in love with Elisabeth of Valois, but political necessity forces her to marry his father, King Philip II, instead. Heartbroken, Carlo must hide his feelings while serving the Spanish crown.

Encouraged by his loyal friend Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa, Carlo devotes himself to the oppressed people of Flanders, hoping to secure their freedom from Spanish rule. However, the royal court is filled with intrigue and suspicion. Princess Eboli's jealousy and betrayal expose Carlo's secret, while the powerful Grand Inquisitor pressures the King to suppress all opposition.

Rodrigo sacrifices his life to protect his friend, proving the strength of their friendship. In the final moments, Carlo is confronted by both political and personal tragedy as he disappears into the monastery of San Yuste, leaving his fate shrouded in mystery.
