Die tote Stadt is a haunting psychological drama about love, grief, and the struggle to let go of the past.
Paul, still devastated by the death of his beloved wife Marie, lives in the city of Bruges, surrounded by memories and keepsakes that keep her presence alive. His life changes when he meets Marietta, a lively dancer who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife.
Captivated by her appearance, Paul becomes trapped between reality and illusion. As his obsession grows, he begins to confuse Marietta with Marie, unable to distinguish memory from the present. Their relationship spirals into a dreamlike nightmare filled with passion, jealousy, and guilt.
In a dramatic vision, Paul believes he has killed Marietta. Awakening from the nightmare, he realizes it was only a dream. Finally understanding that he cannot continue living in the past, he resolves to leave Bruges and begin a new chapter in his life.
