Der fliegende Holländer - Richard Wagner

The Flying Dutchman / Der fliegende Holländer tells the legendary tale of a sea captain condemned to sail the oceans forever. Cursed for defying God during a violent storm, the Dutchman is allowed to come ashore only once every seven years in the hope of finding a woman whose faithful love can break the curse.

During one of these rare visits, he meets Senta, the daughter of the Norwegian captain Daland. Fascinated by the legend of the mysterious sailor, Senta believes she is destined to save him. Despite being promised to the hunter Erik, she remains devoted to the Dutchman.

When the Dutchman fears that Senta's love is not true, he prepares to leave forever. To prove her unwavering loyalty, Senta sacrifices her life. Her selfless act finally frees the Dutchman from his eternal curse, and the two are united in redemption beyond death.
