Nijinsky is a powerful and deeply moving ballet that portrays the extraordinary life of the legendary dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky, one of the greatest stars of the early 20th century.
The ballet unfolds as a series of memories during Nijinsky's final public appearance in 1919, just before his descent into mental illness. Past and present merge as he relives defining moments of his life: his breathtaking performances with the Ballets Russes, his groundbreaking choreography, his passionate and complex relationship with impresario Sergei Diaghilev, his marriage to Romola de Pulszky, and the emotional struggles that gradually consume him.
Rather than following a chronological narrative, John Neumeier blends reality, memory, dreams, and iconic scenes from Nijinsky's most celebrated roles into a powerful psychological portrait of a brilliant artist whose genius came at a tremendous personal cost.
Essence
Nijinsky is an emotionally profound ballet about genius, creativity, love, memory, and human vulnerability. Through expressive choreography, striking theatrical imagery, and a richly textured musical collage, John Neumeier pays tribute to one of ballet's greatest legends while exploring the fragile boundary between artistic brilliance and mental collapse.
