Andrea Chénier is a passionate drama of love, idealism, and sacrifice, set against the turbulent backdrop of the French Revolution.
The young poet Andrea Chénier believes in justice, freedom, and human dignity. During a lavish aristocratic gathering, he condemns the inequality and suffering surrounding him, unaware that the revolution he supports will soon descend into violence and terror.
Years later, amid the chaos of revolutionary France, Chénier reunites with Maddalena di Coigny, an aristocratic woman whose family has been destroyed by the Revolution. Their love blossoms despite the danger that surrounds them. However, Gérard, once a servant and now a powerful revolutionary leader, is also in love with Maddalena. Torn between jealousy and his own conscience, he accuses Chénier of treason.
Although Gérard eventually realizes Chénier's innocence and tries to save him, it is too late. Chénier is sentenced to death. In a final act of devotion, Maddalena chooses to take the place of another prisoner so she can die beside the man she loves. Together they walk toward the guillotine, united by love that transcends fear and death.
